1. Clear the gutters and downspouts
This is the big one. Gutters clogged with fall leaves can’t drain, and that standing water contributes directly to ice dams once it freezes. Clean them out after the leaves have mostly dropped, and make sure downspouts carry water well away from the house.
2. Have the roof looked over
A check before winter catches the small stuff while it’s still small — a few lifted or cracked shingles, worn flashing around the chimney, or a tired pipe boot. Any of these is a minor fix in October and a winter leak in February. Better to find them now.
3. Check the attic
Take a look in your attic for signs of moisture, staining, or daylight, and make sure insulation isn’t blocking your soffit vents. Good airflow and a well-insulated attic are your best defense against ice dams, because they keep the roof cold and even in temperature all winter.
4. Trim overhanging branches
Limbs that hang over the roof drop debris, scrape shingles in the wind, and become a real hazard under the weight of snow and ice. Trimming them back before winter removes a common cause of storm damage.
5. Don’t put off known issues
